T-mobile's real-time translation beta kicks off, bridging language gaps

T-Mobile is taking a major step towards global communication with the launch of its real-time translation beta. This network-based feature removes the need for additional hardware and can translate calls in over 50 languages, bridging the gap for multilingual families and travelers.

The beta is now accepting postpaid customers, who can initiate the translation process by dialing 87. The service will work across all kind of phones, including landlines and feature phones, as long as at least one call participant is on T-Mobile.

While T-Mobile claims its network will clone users' voices, it remains to be seen if the translation will sound human and not robotic. Additionally, the tech will need to keep up with fast-paced speakers and maintain language nuance.

What's in store for the future

If the service works as envisioned, users won't need a pair of AirPods Pro 3 or Google Translate to act as their interpreter. The feature is free during the beta period, with the commercial launch planned for later this year, although T-Mobile hasn't said whether it will begin charging for the service then.
