Starlink mobile v2 to deliver 5g-like speeds, t-mobile gains ground

T-Mobile customers are set for a significant boost in connectivity thanks to the arrival of SpaceX's upgraded Starlink Mobile service. The rollout, following a successful beta, promises speeds comparable to 5g, potentially shifting the balance of power in the satellite internet landscape.

Next-generation satellites promise a significant leap

The rebranded Starlink Mobile, formerly known as Direct to Cell, is undergoing a major overhaul with the introduction of next-generation V2 satellites. These satellites boast custom-built chips and advanced phased-array antennas, capable of handling 20 times the data traffic of their predecessors. SpaceX's Senior Director of Satellite Engineering, Ben Longmier, highlighted the two-fold improvement in capacity, a considerable advancement.

While current satellite speeds lag behind traditional networks, the V2 satellites aim to close that gap. T-Mobile has optimized select apps for the service, enabling basic functions like texting and location sharing, though delays of up to 15 seconds can occur. The service activates automatically when terrestrial networks fail, offering a lifeline during emergencies.

The competition is heating up. AST SpaceMobile, T-Mobile’s rival, aims to launch its own satellite service later this year with peak data rates of 120 Mbps. AT&T has publicly questioned T-Mobile's offering, but SpaceX's advancements suggest T-Mobile will maintain an edge. The expanded connectivity is set to be available to T-Mobile premium plan subscribers, as well as AT&T and Verizon customers.
