Smartsens unveils 1-inch sensor poised to challenge sony's dominance
The competition for top-tier smartphone camera supremacy is heating up. Chinese sensor maker SmartSens has announced the SC5A6XS, a 1-inch image sensor aiming to rival the industry-leading Sony LYT-901, typically found in flagship devices.

While the Sony LYT-901 boasts a 1/1.12-inch format, the SC5A6XS steps up with a significantly larger 1-inch sensor. This isn't just incremental; it's a substantial leap that promises enhanced light capture and improved image quality – a direct challenge to the current status quo.
Expected to debut in upcoming flagships from brands like Xiaomi, Honor, Oppo, Vivo, Huawei, and potentially even Samsung, the 50MP SC5A6XS is built on a 22nm stacked process, incorporating SmartSens' Lofic HDR 3.0 Technology. This allows for a remarkable 115dB dynamic range, a feat designed to preserve detail in both highlights and shadows. The sensor also incorporates multi-frame fusion for improved HDR and reduced motion blur, a boon for video recording.
Beyond dynamic range, the SC5A6XS targets advanced video capabilities, supporting 4K recording at 120fps and 4K HDR at 60fps. Large 1.6μm pixels and SFCPixel Technology work in tandem to boost light sensitivity and minimize noise, particularly in low-light conditions. Autofocus combines full-pixel ADAF with phase detection for quicker, more reliable results.
SmartSens also made strides in power efficiency, reducing HDR-related power consumption by roughly 11%. Mass production is slated for Q2 2026, suggesting its arrival in next-generation Huawei phones is imminent.
