Even as the tech world buzzes about the upcoming Galaxy S26, Samsung is already setting its sights on its next major software refresh: One UI 9. Leaks indicate the new customization layer is undergoing internal testing, poised for debut on the company's next generation of foldable devices and tablets.

Samsung has altered its update schedule, delivering interim versions like One UI 8.5 with the S series before full iterations arrive with the foldables in the autumn. Consequently, the S26 launched with 8.5, while One UI 9 is slated for the Z Fold 8, anticipated by the end of 2026. Early glimpses, courtesy of SamMobile and Twitter leaker @tarunvats33, reveal the build BZC5 running on Galaxy Z Fold 8 prototypes.

Visual changes are understated but thoughtful. Volume and brightness sliders now occupy more screen real estate, enhancing one-handed usability. A more prominent shortcut to parental controls in Settings addresses a long-standing user request.

The real transformation lies beneath the surface. One UI 9 isn't merely a visual overhaul; it's built upon Android 17, a significant upgrade promising a complete system refresh. Samsung has leveraged Android 17's core optimizations, including up to 20% reduced background RAM consumption, 15% faster app execution, and a new partitioning system for quicker and more secure updates.

These improvements will be particularly noticeable on devices powered by Exynos 2600 or Snapdragon 8 Elite 2 chips, expected in the upcoming foldables. The interface will retain the familiar One UI essence, but with smoother animations and transitions optimized for the 120Hz AMOLED displays.

Galaxy AI integration continues to be a priority. One UI 9 will boast enhancements to features like Circle to Search, an improved Live Translate supporting 20 additional languages, and a writing assistant better attuned to lengthy conversations.

The Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Z Flip 8 will receive One UI 9 in the fourth quarter of 2026, followed by the S27 series in the first quarter of 2027. Compatible devices will encompass all flagships from the S23 onwards, alongside the Galaxy Tab S10/S11 tablets and the Galaxy Watch 8 series.

The emphasis isn't on radical reinvention, but on refining the user experience. Samsung is betting on a more efficient and intelligent software foundation, setting the stage for a compelling lineup of devices.
