Samsung galaxy s27 ultra may get major camera upgrade, but not the sensor you expected
Samsung is poised
to refresh its Galaxy S27 Ultra camera system, but the upgrade won't be the one many anticipated. While the S26 Ultra retained the same main camera sensor as its predecessor, reports suggest the S27 Ultra could boast a significantly enhanced sensor, potentially delivering a leap in image quality.New sensor on the horizon
According to information from prominent Chinese leaker Digital Chat Station, Samsung is developing a larger 1/1.12” sensor called ISOCELL HPA for the Galaxy S27 Ultra. This would be a substantial upgrade from the current sensor, while maintaining the 200MP resolution. The new sensor promises improved dynamic range thanks to LOFIC Technology.
Adding fuel to the speculation, leaker Ice Universe claims Samsung will employ a modified ISOCELL HPA sensor, potentially dubbed HP6, measuring 1/1.3” and retaining the performance of the larger sensor. This aligns with rumors circulating about Apple also exploring LOFIC sensors for its upcoming iPhone 18 lineup, a Technology recently showcased in the Xiaomi 17 Ultra.
The Galaxy S26 Ultra, launched last year, utilized the same sensor found in previous Samsung Ultra flagships. That decision, while ensuring consistency, may have left some wanting more. A new sensor could address this, potentially elevating the S27 Ultra's camera to a new level.
The timing is noteworthy. The Galaxy S26 series faced delays earlier this year, a testament to Samsung’s willingness to adjust plans. This suggests a commitment to delivering a compelling camera experience – even if it means tweaking timelines.
While the S26 Ultra's optics and software were commendable, the core sensor remained a point of contention for some. A move to a larger, more advanced sensor could finally satisfy those demands. The wait, however, is still a year away.
Samsung has consistently ranked among the top smartphone camera performers, even with a relatively unchanged sensor setup for several years. The potential gains from a new sensor are considerable.
The S27 Ultra's camera upgrade isn’t just about megapixels; it’s about capturing more light, preserving greater detail, and expanding the range of possible photographic outcomes. This isn't a simple iteration; it's a potential paradigm shift.
The Galaxy S27 series’ debut will be closely watched. Samsung has a reputation to uphold, and the camera is a key component of that.
The tease of a significantly upgraded sensor isn't just speculation; it represents Samsung doubling down on its camera prowess – a move that could redefine expectations for flagship smartphone photography.
