Pixel 7 and newer get enhanced commute features in latest update
Commuters rejoice: Google's latest Pixel Drop brings welcome improvements to navigating the daily grind, though some older devices are left behind.

New transit mode and at a glance updates simplify daily journeys
The update, rolled out last week, introduces a customized Transit mode and enhanced At a Glance widget functionality, designed to streamline the commuting experience. The Transit mode leverages Bluetooth and motion sensors to intelligently adjust phone settings based on whether you're on a train or bus – think quieter volumes and silenced notifications.
But the improvements aren't limited to Transit mode. The At a Glance widget now offers proactive commute alerts, providing real-time updates on delays and disruptions. Google Maps data is used to learn your typical commute routes, offering warnings like "Significant delays on work route" with specific details like "The Blue line from Main Station is delayed.".
The feature requires users to grant At a Glance permission to access location data, and setting up commute notifications involves providing your home and work addresses within the Settings app. It takes 2-3 weeks for commute information to appear as Google Maps gathers sufficient data.
However, the enhancements are exclusive to Pixel 7 and later devices, requiring the Tensor G2 processor. This means Pixel 6 series users, including the Pixel 6 Pro, are excluded. While this isn't entirely unexpected given the Pixel 6 Pro's impending Android 15 support end, it leaves a significant portion of Pixel owners without these new tools.
The update can also be accessed through the My Pixel app under Tips > Everyday Tools. This latest iteration highlights Google's ongoing commitment to refining the user experience, but also underscores the trade-offs inherent in hardware support cycles. The Pixel 7 and newer models are now equipped with the latest tools for a smoother commute, while older devices are left to navigate the delays as they always have.
