Pixel 11 disappoints: battery woes threaten to sink google's flagship
Google’s Pixel lineup is typically a quiet revolution – a masterclass in software and imaging that consistently outpaces rivals. But whispers circulating closer to the Pixel 11’s launch are painting a decidedly less rosy picture, and it boils down to one critical omission: a substantial battery upgrade.
The pixel 11’s silent crisis
Rumors, fueled by leaks from Amazon listings and reliable sources like Roland Quandt, indicate that the upcoming Pixel 11 series – including the Pro, Pro XL, and even the rumored Fold – will actually feature smaller batteries than their predecessors. The Pro models, in particular, are reportedly sacrificing 20mAh and 85mAh respectively compared to the Pixel 10 Pro and Pro XL.
Almost 40% of respondents in a recent poll expressed a fervent desire for longer battery life in the Pixel 11, a sentiment echoed by my own experience daily driving the Pixel 10. Frankly, the prospect of a flagship device that falls short on a fundamental aspect like endurance is profoundly underwhelming.
Fan demand ignored?
Pixel enthusiasts have consistently prioritized battery performance. The Pixel 10 Pro XL already set the bar high, offering exceptional longevity, and dwarfed competitors like the OnePlus 15 in our head-to-head testing. A battery capacity of 5,115mAh – a reduction of 85mAh – for the Pro XL is a significant step backward. While software optimization and chip efficiency can undoubtedly mitigate some of the impact, they can only go so far.
Silicon-carbon delay?
The situation isn’t entirely unexpected. Many are pointing to Google’s reluctance to embrace silicon-carbon battery Technology, a proven solution championed by rivals like Samsung. While Google’s Tensor G6 processor and the new MediaTek M90 modem are undoubtedly advancements, they won’t compensate for a fundamental lack of battery capacity. Samsung's move to this tech signals a clear path forward, and Google’s hesitation feels increasingly short-sighted.
A year’s wait?
I’m personally holding off on the Pixel 11. The leaked specifications leave me cold, and I’m anticipating a more substantial leap forward with the Pixel 12. Samsung’s adoption of silicon-carbon suggests a future where Pixel batteries can finally match the performance of its competitors – a future I’m willing to wait for.
