Musk framed TeraFab as the next step toward a “galactic civilization,” signaling a shift in priorities beyond traditional gigafactories. Instead of measuring production by units, Musk is focusing on power consumption. TeraFab, projected to exceed one terawatt of annual output – a thousand times more than current gigafactories – will produce chips with 100 to 200 gigawatts of computational power.

“Or we build the TeraFab, or we won’t have the chips, and we need the chips, so we’re building the TeraFab,” Musk stated during the presentation, a blunt assessment of the current supply chain vulnerabilities.

The ambition is staggering. Musk estimates that global ai compute power currently stands at around 20 gigawatts annually, a figure he considers only 2% of what's needed. The remaining 800 gigawatts will fuel SpaceX’s ambitious plans for a million satellites and its orbital aicenters. The facility will encompass the entire chip manufacturing process: semiconductors, memory, packaging, testing, and lithographic mask production – all under one roof.

Two types of chips will be produced: terrestrial processors for Tesla’s vehicles and Optimus humanoid robots, and specialized space chips designed to withstand the harsh conditions of orbit. Musk claims this integrated approach is unparalleled globally, promising accelerated chip development and production.

While the TeraFab project is underway, concrete timelines for production and terawatt output remain elusive. The sheer scale of the investment, however, underscores Musk's unwavering commitment to reshaping the future of computing and space exploration. This isn’t just about chips; it’s about building the infrastructure for a future deeply intertwined with artificial intelligence.
