Since their introduction in 2018, Google’s smart replies offered convenient suggestions for quick responses. However, the automatic sending upon tapping felt…premature. The new feature, spotted in a recent beta build, allows users to compose and send smart replies manually, editing them as needed.

The core issue? Previously, tapping a suggested reply instantly sent it. A minor inconvenience, yes, but one that accumulated into a frustrating pattern. Users often tapped, intending to edit the response, only to send a pre-composed message requiring clarification.

The “Tap to Draft” toggle, now available in beta build 20260303_00_RC00, changes that. Now, tapping a suggested reply loads it into the text field, allowing for manual editing before sending. This simple shift acknowledges that users often need to refine suggested responses.

This isn't just a tweak; it's a recognition of user workflow. It’s a small change that speaks volumes about Google’s responsiveness to user feedback. After years of using the feature, the shift feels like a welcome correction.

The new option is located in Message Settings> Suggestions> Tap to Draft. If disabled, the old, automatic behavior remains.
