Foldable iphone nears launch; huawei responds with rival devices

Apple's foray into the foldable market is spurring a competitive response. Reports indicate that Huawei is developing not one, but two new wide-folding phones, one mirroring the design of the upcoming iPhone and another a successor to its existing Pura X.

Huawei's dual-fold strategy counters apple

The anticipated foldable iPhone, slated for a late-year launch alongside or shortly after the iPhone 15 Pro, is expected to adopt a horizontal unfolding design, resembling an iPad. This contrasts with the Huawei Pura X, a wider foldable designed to unfold vertically. The move is a direct reaction to Apple’s entry into the high-end foldable space, a segment previously dominated by Samsung.

While details on hardware upgrades for the potential Huawei Pura X2 remain scarce, the company is planning to release the new model in vibrant colors like orange and purple. The foldable iPhone, however, is rumored to stick with a more reserved palette of black and white.

This isn't the first time Huawei has emulated Apple's design language. Samsung, too, is reportedly working on a Galaxy Z Wide Fold to compete with Apple's anticipated device. The race to define the future of foldable smartphones is heating up.

The foldable phone market has matured considerably in recent years. Issues surrounding durability and display creases, which initially hampered adoption, are gradually being addressed. Devices like the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7, Honor Magic V6, and Oppo Find N6 have demonstrated the Technology's evolving potential. The upcoming competition from Huawei and Samsung promises even greater refinement, particularly with Samsung potentially leveraging its crease-free displays on the Fold 8 and Wide Fold.

The design of foldable phones remains a key differentiator. Apple's approach—a horizontal fold—is a significant departure from earlier designs and could set a new standard.
