Apple's iOS 27 to Authenticate iPhone Photos with 'Reference Image' Feature
Apple is reportedly set to introduce a feature in iOS 27 that will allow users to authenticate their iPhonephotos, providing proof they were taken with the device's camera. This comes as a response to the growing issue of AI-edited or AI-generated photos.
According to the latest report, the feature is called "Reference Image." It utilizes unique data tied to the iPhone camera hardware that captured the photo for authentication. Some code lines in iOS 27 beta 5 reveal how the feature works.
When enabled, the Reference mode needs to be turned on before taking a photo. Regular iPhone photos won't automatically get the provenance information needed for later authentication. Users can choose to authenticate a photo later, sending the original image and its data to Apple's Private Cloud Compute for verification.
Apple takes a privacy-friendly approach, not being able to see the original photo itself. Only certain sensor information and photo metadata are sent to the company for authentication. If Apple detects a compromised sensor, it may annul any prior authentications linked to that sensor.
The feature doesn't verify photos immediately. Instead, it allows users to authenticate a photo later, sending the image and its data to Apple's Private Cloud Compute for verification. If the check passes, Apple assigns a unique ID to the photo.
Users will initially have the feature turned off by default. To enable it, they would likely find it in the Settings> Camera> Reference Image menu, with the option to enable "Reference Mode" before taking photos.
This move by Apple joins similar efforts from Google, OpenAI, and Meta to combat AI-generated content and provide transparency about the source of photos.
