Apple's airpods max 2: incremental upgrade or costly iteration?
Apple has unveiled its latest premium over-ear headphones, the AirPods Max 2, with a familiar design and a price tag of €579. The launch, predictably, has ignited the tech world. But are the updates substantial enough to justify the investment?

Airpods max 2: same-ish, but smarter
The new AirPods Max 2 largely mirror the specifications of their 2020 predecessors. Apple acknowledges enhancements, primarily a more potent active noise cancellation (ANC) system and AI-powered features. This isn’t a revolution, but rather a refinement of a proven formula.
Under the hood, the biggest change is the adoption of the H2 chip, the same silicon found in the AirPods Pro 3. This allows for on-device processing of AI features like conversation detection, voice isolation, and personalized volume. The new headphones also boast real-time translation, a welcome addition absent in the original model.
The audio quality remains lossless with ultra-low latency via USB-C, a feature carried over from the 2020 version. Users can now customize the audio format with adaptive audio and a transparency mode. Battery life remains around 20 hours with ANC enabled, consistent with the original AirPods Max.
Competing directly with the likes of Sony's WH-1000XM6 and Bose's QuietComfort Ultra 2, the AirPods Max 2 maintain the same aesthetic – available in midnight black, starlight white, blue, purple, and orange. They also include the same Smart Case, preserving their distinct silhouette. The headphones incorporate nine microphones in total, eight dedicated to ANC and three for voice pickup.
The 134.5-gram weight and dimensions remain unchanged. Apple’s claim of 1.5x greater noise cancellation is a noteworthy improvement, but real-world testing will reveal its true impact. The AirPods Max 2 arrive at a time when consumers are increasingly discerning about premium audio – a market Apple has long dominated.
The real question is whether incremental improvements are enough to maintain Apple's position. The AirPods Max 2 represent an evolution, not a reinvention. And for a price point that rivals top competitors, consumers will demand more than just a polished iteration.
The move to the H2 chip signals Apple's commitment to integrating more AI into their audio products, a trend that will likely define the future of headphones. But the core experience remains largely unchanged, a testament to the original’s solid foundation.
Ultimately, the AirPods Max 2 are a safe bet for Apple loyalists, but those seeking a more radical upgrade might find themselves looking elsewhere.
