Apple watch series 12: another year, same watch?

Apple is expected to release a new Apple Watch this fall, but don't expect a revolution. Sources indicate the Apple Watch Series 12 will largely mirror last year's Series 11, a continuation of a design strategy that has left many wanting more.

Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reports the upcoming smartwatch will retain the same aesthetic as the 2016 Apple Watch Series 11. This marks the third consecutive generation to adopt this design, following the Series 10's introduction of 42mm and 46mm sizes and a slimmer profile.

Rumors of a radical redesign, including a potential Apple Watch X for the 2025 anniversary, have persisted for years. However, none have materialized. The trend of iterative updates isn't unique to Apple; the Pixel Watch 4 and Samsung Galaxy Watch 8 have also seen minimal visual changes compared to their predecessors.

It’s not that innovation has ceased; rather, the smartwatch market has matured. Many consumers are content with the existing functionality. A complete overhaul, particularly a shift to a circular design, presents considerable risks. Apple has, perhaps, concluded that some things simply don’t need reinventing.

The lack of significant change isn't necessarily a failure. It reflects a calculated approach to product development, prioritizing refinement over radical disruption. And, in the fast-paced tech world, sometimes “good enough” is precisely what consumers desire. The Apple Watch remains a dominant force in the smartwatch market, and a predictable update may be all it needs to maintain its position.
