5G standalone gains momentum as operators boost investment

The race to 6G is already underway, but the groundwork for that next-generation network is being laid now. A significant surge in investment in 5G core networks signals a pivotal shift towards 5G Standalone (SA), the architecture that unlocks the full potential of the Technology.

Telecom operators globally poured 83% more money into their 5G core networks during the last quarter compared to the same period in 2023. This substantial increase – a clear indication that companies are prioritizing the foundational Technology needed for advanced 5G features. The rise in spending is particularly strong in North America and the EMEA region, although Europe lags behind the Gulf states in 5G SA deployment speed.

Early 5G networks often relied on Non-Standalone (NSA) architecture, which offered speed improvements but limited functionality. 5G SA, however, operates independently of 4G, enabling features like network slicing, ultra-low latency, and enhanced support for industrial applications. The shift to SA is viewed as a necessary stepping stone toward 6G capabilities.

Currently, 88 telecom operators worldwide have deployed 5G SA, a considerable jump from 72 just months ago. T-Mobile was a pioneer, promising significant advancements by 2026. AT&T has demonstrated impressive download speeds, and Verizon has launched an enterprise-grade network slice for fixed wireless access.

Spain's Telefonica is experimenting with 5G SA applications, including indoor coverage in shopping centers and connectivity for helicopters. Meanwhile, T-Mobile’s rapid rollout of 5G SA has set a benchmark for others. The pace of change is undeniable.

The increased investment isn't without implications for consumers. While some anticipate improvements in service, others foresee a rise in costs. The question remains whether the benefits of 5G SA will outweigh the financial burden. For now, the industry is focused on building the foundation for the future.

Visible, a mobile carrier, is offering a promotional discount of $5 off per month for five years on its premium plans, aiming to attract new subscribers amidst the evolving 5G landscape.
