Baseball's future just got a lot more precise. Starting with the 2026 season, Major League Baseball will introduce an Automated Ball Strike (ABS) Challenge System powered by T-Mobile's 5G network, promising to reshape the game and curb umpire disputes.

New technology aims to reduce umpire arguements

For decades, the contentious issue of balls and strikes has fueled heated exchanges between managers and umpires. Remember the countless replays, the frustrated gestures, the manager storming the field? Those scenes could become a relic of the past.

Thanks to Hawk-Eye's sophisticated camera system – strategically positioned throughout stadiums – every pitch will be meticulously tracked. The system captures hundreds of frames per second, pinpointing the ball's trajectory and determining whether it crosses within the defined strike zone.

The system will allow each team two challenges per game, triggered by a signal from the pitcher, catcher, or batter. A graphic display, visible on stadium scoreboards and television broadcasts, will show the pitch's path and the strike zone, instantly confirming whether the call was correct.

T-Mobile's involvement extends beyond simply providing the network. As the official wireless provider of MLB, Minor League Baseball, and Little League through 2028, the company is actively promoting the sport while boosting its own brand visibility. The Seattle Mariners, who played a prominent role in the national spotlight during their recent playoff run, call T-Mobile Park home.

The carrier is also offering MLB.com subscriptions free to its subscribers from March 24th-30th, providing access to out-of-market games. This move underlines T-Mobile's commitment to enhancing the fan experience, whether they’re at the ballpark or watching from home.
