The publication cited administration officials who described a deluge of calls directed at the White House, with incoming calls from the press reaching as many as 10 per two-hour period.
In 2019, during his second term, Trump had signaled a desire for the U.S. to lead the way in 6G development. Now, the accessibility of his personal number raises questions about the balance between transparency and security, as well as the value placed on direct access to power.
White House spokesperson Anna Kelly characterized the situation as a testament to Trump’s popularity, stating, "President Trump is the most transparent and accessible president in history. The press can’t get enough of Trump, and they know it.". However, the ease with which this number is now disseminated presents a distinct contrast to its previous exclusivity.
The incident highlights a shift. Initially private, the number's availability has expanded dramatically. One administration official likened the situation to "a wrecking ball," emphasizing the chaotic nature of the current situation.
The White House Communications Agency, staffed by military officials, has reportedly struggled to keep track of who is calling, often requiring staff to Google the names of incoming journalists. The rapid spread of the number suggests a blurring of lines between journalistic access and potential influence peddling.
