Hbbtv brings interactive internet features to spain's free-to-air tv

Spain's public broadcaster RTVE has become the first to introduce Hybrid Broadcast Broadband (HbbTV) technology to the country's free-to-air TV, allowing viewers to access additional web content alongside live broadcasts.

The move marks a significant shift in the country's television landscape, enabling the 20 million-plus households with digital terrestrial television (DTT) to enjoy interactive features and streaming services.

LOVEStv, a platform developed by the Spanish Digital Television Association (FEDIT), provides the key to unlocking this new era of TV viewing. By combining broadcast and broadband signals, HbbTV enables seamless access to the internet from the comfort of viewers' living rooms.

RTVE is just the first to adopt this technology, with other broadcasters, operators, and content owners expected to follow suit in the coming months. LOVEStv is compatible with Microsoft's PlayReady and Google's Widevine digital rights management systems, ensuring a smooth rollout.

One of the standout features of HbbTV is its support for WebAssembly, a low-level programming language that enables advanced functionality such as sign language services from Catalonia's 3Cat public broadcaster.

In a further boost to viewer privacy, the technology also incorporates support for the next-generation video codecs VVC and AV1, although this is an optional feature.
