Digi shakes up telecoms: cheaper rates, bbc content boost

DIGI, the Romanian low-cost operator, is aggressively undercutting rivals like Movistar, Orange, and Vodafone with its fiber and mobile pricing. The move puts pressure on established players to lower their prices, but DIGI faces a challenge: its streaming service needs a serious upgrade to truly compete.

DIGI's strategy centers on affordability. The company is now offering its basic package with a sports add-on for just €3 extra per month. This is a direct challenge to the premium offerings of competitors. But while the low prices are attention-grabbing, DIGI TV’s current content library lags behind. Movistar Plus+ offers a compelling package including football, series, and movies for €9.99 a month with no contract. This is the benchmark DIGI needs to reach if it wants to retain customers.

The latest development is a significant one: DIGI has secured six new channels from BBC Studios, available free to all paying subscribers. This includes BBC Series, BBC Lifestyle, BBC History, BBC Food, BBC Earth, and Top Gear, all broadcasting in high definition and in Spanish. The addition of Top Gear, a popular automotive show, is particularly noteworthy.

DIGI is also proactively addressing a growing threat: ghost pairing. The operator has issued a warning to customers about the ease with which malicious actors can gain control of their WhatsApp accounts, potentially accessing sensitive data. This cybersecurity alert underlines the evolving risks of online connectivity.

The move to include BBC channels is a strategic play to boost subscriber engagement. The channels, launching on March 4th, offer a diverse range of content – from historical documentaries to cooking shows and nature programs – broadening DIGI TV’s appeal. The addition of the sports pack, offering LaLiga Hypermotion and Eurosport 4K, further enhances the value proposition.

The subscriber base will see benefits from the package boost. The price point of €7 per month for the paid OTT service feels increasingly attractive given the new content. This is a calculated gamble by DIGI, one that could significantly alter the competitive landscape.
