According to Creative Strategies CEO Ben Bajarin, the chipmaker’s latest earnings report revealed significantly boosted profit margins, fueled by a deliberate decision to monetize what would otherwise be scrap. These edge-die chips, often plagued by minor flaws – occasional thermal throttling, speed limitations, or isolated core failures – were identified, meticulously sorted, and offered as ‘B-Grade’ processors. This ‘binning’ process, a common practice in the foundry world, transforms potential waste into a viable revenue stream.
Intel’s customers, desperate for any available CPU, are snatching up these discounted chips, creating a tangible demand that’s significantly contributed to the company's impressive Q1 performance. Bajarin reports that Investor Relations teams are fielding requests for ‘what may have been scrap or low-expectation output,’ effectively turning a potential loss into a substantial gain. The results speak for themselves: Intel reported $1.4 billion more in revenue than anticipated, a staggering 3000% increase above initial forecasts.

Chip-binning: a new normal?
This isn't just about a single quarter; it reflects a broader shift in the semiconductor landscape. Intel’s gross profit margins jumped an astonishing 650 basis points, far exceeding its own estimates – a remarkable 41.5% compared to its previously projected 34.5%.
