Android 17 beta 1 released: pixel launcher refresh and performance boosts
Android 17 beta 1 now available
nAfter a brief two-day delay, Google has officially released android 17 Beta 1. Pixel users can access the update through Settings>System> Software updates. Even if your device initially indicates it's up-to-date, navigating through the update process is crucial, as demonstrated by my experience with a Pixel 6 Pro. The download size for my device clocked in at approximately 755 MB.

A shift in google's release strategy
nPreviously, Google followed a pattern of releasing Developer Previews before Beta releases. However, with the introduction of a continuous Canary channel, this process has been streamlined. The Canary channel allows for more rapid testing and refinement of new features and APIs, ultimately leading to a more polished Beta experience and faster progression towards the final stable release. This change aims to get features to users sooner and more frequently.
nnOrientation restrictions and app behavior
nandroid 17 brings significant changes regarding app orientation. Developers can no longer opt out of restrictions related to app orientation, meaning apps previously forced into portrait mode with unsightly black bars must now support landscape and multitasking windows. This change doesn’t apply to games, providing flexibility for developers in that specific area. The intent is to improve the overall user experience and provide a more consistent interface.
nnCamera improvements and viewfinder stability
nOne notable enhancement in android 17 Beta 1 focuses on camera app performance. Users can now seamlessly switch between lenses – such as moving from ultrawide to telephoto – without experiencing frustrating freezes or viewfinder skips. This seemingly minor improvement promises a smoother and more enjoyable photography experience, especially for users of devices with multiple camera lenses.
nnPerformance boosts: cpu load reduction
nBeyond camera improvements, android 17 Beta 1 introduces changes to memory management. By potentially reducing the load on the CPU by up to 10%, users may experience improved battery life, particularly when multitasking heavily. Google is always striving for efficiency, and these optimizations are a step in that direction.
nnA fresh look for the pixel launcher
nThe most immediately noticeable change for Pixel users is the redesigned Pixel Launcher search bar. It now features a more transparent aesthetic and abandons the vibrant color-themed ring surrounding the pill-shaped search tool, previously integrated with the wallpaper. It’s slightly wider, and includes shortcuts for AI Mode, voice search, and Google Lens. This design first appeared in android 16 QPR2.
nnSubtle visual tweaks and color palette adjustments
nThe redesign also extends to the
